Everything you need to know about EPAL pallets

min. reading time

The terms “EPAL pallet” and “Europallet” are sometimes used interchangeably. However, EPAL stands for the European Pallet Association. In practice, EPAL refers to a license system that enforces strict guidelines for pallet production. A Europallet may only be called a Europallet if all dimensions and specifications comply with EPAL standards. EPAL defines and monitors these standards with a focus on international transport. Every pallet supplier also has a unique license number including Foresco.

Types of EPAL Europallets

There are three classifications of Europallets that carry the EPAL quality mark:

  • New Europallets: Always treated according to the ISPM 15 standard and come directly from the production process.
  • First-choice Europallets: As good as new, may show minimal signs of use.
  • Used Europallets: Slightly darker in colour, but always repaired in accordance with EPAL requirements, ensuring they maintain the same level of quality.

Foresco keeps both new and used pallets in stock. Want to learn more about our pallets? New pallets are always produced sustainably which is also one of our core values.

Europallet dimensions

Our website contains detailed information about Europallets, but we are happy to explain it again here in our Knowledge Base. Foresco’s Europallets are high-quality wooden pallets, measuring 80 by 120 centimetres. To verify whether EPAL Europallets meet EPAL’s quality standards, there are several markings to look for. If you're unsure whether a Europallet is EPAL-certified, feel free to contact us. With years of experience, Foresco is a true Europallet specialist and a reliable EPAL partner.

What should you look for on an EPAL Europallet?

How can you recognise a genuine EPAL Europallet? Pay attention to the following:

  • The EPAL logo is printed on both the left and right corner blocks.
  • The middle block carries the ISPM 15 marking, with an EPAL identification number underneath. This number contains 6 digits: 3 digits representing the EPAL license code, 1 digit for the production year, and 2 digits for the production month.
  • A black or yellow control staple featuring the EPAL logo, applied by an official EPAL producer. This confirms that the pallet has passed an independent quality control test.
  • Nails are placed in standard positions. Each nail head is marked with a 2-letter code.
  • A repair nail may be present, also bearing the EPAL logo. Above the logo is a country code, and below it, a unique EPAL license number of the authorised repairer. If repairs were poorly carried out, the responsible party can always be traced.

Open exchange system for EPAL Europallets

Thanks to EPAL’s high standards, Europallets are regularly exchanged in international transport without financial transactions. For example, suppliers deliver 50 loaded pallets and collect 50 empty ones in return. When this number doesn’t match, companies may face either a pallet surplus or a pallet debt. EPAL Europallets can also be exchanged with pallets bearing a EUR mark on the blocks these are pallets produced before August 2013. Replacement pallets can be obtained from a certified dealer or official EPAL producer. Foresco is one such licensed EPAL producer.
